Various
people have been talking about equity issues
both in literacy
and in research-in-practice.
A group of us gathered in the spring of 2007
to talk about
what kind of workshops we could have.
Two thought-provoking and challenging half-day workshops about
equity issues
in literacy programs took place in May.
The workshops were called
Reflect, Re-name, Re-imagine Our Work:
Equity and Diversity
Speaking Through Zines
The workshops were facilitated by Jay
Pitter,
a cultural
manager and popular educator,
trained in
and deeply committed to anti-oppression and equity.
We were encouraged to explore through
an interactive
and arts-based approach,
reflecting, re-naming,
and re-imagining
our literacy work in the context of
equity and
diversity.
