The Story Group

In the spring, summer and fall of 2006, a group of practitioners met to
reflect on practice through storytelling. They told their own stories and
explored the use of story in the literacy field.

The group was facilitated by Tannis Atkinson and Sheila Stewart.
The participants were Mary Brehaut, Guy Ewing, Michelle Kuhlman,
Tracey Mollins and Maria Moriarty.

The Story Group evolved into The Uses of Narrative in Adult Literacy Teaching and Learning Project funded by the Canadian Council on Learning from September 2007 until December 2008.

I want to think about what is being revealed in our stories  -
and to think about what is being hidden –
I want to think about how learners’ stories can be honoured
and about just what is going on when we write our stories down –
when they somehow appear to have more “legitimacy”
or somehow become fixed…
I want to think about my own extreme attachment to written stories –
they are where I first go when I want to know something
or when I need to escape or be comforted –
I’d like to think about why I attach so much value to reading….
